Cornices & ceilings
Which cornice height for which room?
It is all about proportion. Under a standard 2.50 m ceiling, a cornice of 8 to 12 cm structures the space without crushing it. From 2.60 m to 2.80 m, dare 12 to 18 cm. Above 3 m, generous profiles of 18 cm and more come into their own. Remember: the ceiling height allows the cornice, never the other way round.
How does an indirect-lighting cornice work?
Its secret: a channel facing the ceiling, holding an LED strip completely invisible from the room. Light glides across the ceiling in a soft halo, with no glare. Position the cornice 10 to 15 cm below the ceiling and plan a power supply nearby: the effect is spectacular.
What is a curtain pelmet for?
To make the hardware disappear and keep only the fabric. Fixed to the ceiling or the wall in front of the pole, it hides tracks, brackets and curtain headings. The sheer seems to flow straight from the ceiling — a signature of fine hotels, within reach.
My ceiling is not perfectly straight: is that a problem?
No, and it is very common. Our profiles tolerate slight irregularities, and an acrylic filler erases small gaps before painting. On a truly uneven ceiling, draw a level line and follow it: a straight cornice line forgives everything, a wavy line forgives nothing.
How do I get clean cornice corners?
With a mitre saw or mitre box, cutting at 45°. Remember that inside and outside corners are mirror images: practise on two offcuts before the final cut. Glue, adjust, then fill the joint. A clean result guaranteed.
Ceiling roses
How do I choose the diameter of a ceiling rose or medallion?
The medallion talks to two things: the room and the light fitting. Under 12 m²: stay between 30 and 40 cm. Medium room: 40 to 60 cm. Large volume or high ceiling: 60 cm and above. Facing the chandelier, the golden rule: a rose diameter about a third larger than that of the fitting.
How do I fix a ceiling rose?
Mounting adhesive is enough for most models: glue the whole contact surface, press, hold for a few moments. For large diameters, secure with two or three screws, filled afterwards. Remember to drill the cable hole before gluing.
Can I pair a ceiling rose with a heavy chandelier?
Absolutely — as long as you understand who carries what. The light fitting is fixed to the ceiling, through the rose, onto a ceiling box or a firmly anchored hook. The rose itself carries nothing: it enhances. No load should ever hang from it.
Can a ceiling rose be painted in colour?
It is one of its finest expressions. Two coats of acrylic paint, after a primer on a bare surface. The reliefs lend themselves to colour play: gilded highlights, patinas, subtle contrasts with the ceiling. Let the décor speak.
Mouldings & walls
Moulding, dado rail, cornice: who does what?
Three roles, one family. The cornice reigns where wall meets ceiling. The dado rail draws its horizontal line about a metre from the floor. Moulding is the generic name for all these decorative profiles, including those that draw frames on your walls. To go further, see our decorating glossary.
How do I compose elegant wall frames?
Success lies in the marking out. Draw your frames in pencil with constant spacing, leaving 10 to 15 cm between frame and wall corner. 45° cuts, gluing, filled joints. Tone on tone with the wall for contemporary elegance; in contrast for a more classic look.
Can a moulding follow a curve?
Yes, thanks to flexible mouldings. Arches, rounded walls, stairwells: their supple material follows the curve without distorting, then cuts and paints like a rigid profile. Choose the same design as your straight mouldings: continuity will be perfect.
How do I make the joint between two mouldings invisible?
Two straight cuts, edge-to-edge gluing, then an acrylic filler smoothed with a damp finger. After drying, a light sanding and the paint do the rest: the joint literally vanishes into the décor.
Skirting boards
Polyurethane or MDF skirting: how to decide?
Two temperaments. Polyurethane ignores water and takes knocks: kitchens, bathrooms, busy hallways. MDF offers that impeccable lacquered-wood look that marks fine dry rooms. Old or uneven walls? Polyurethane, more forgiving, makes fitting easier.
Do skirting boards delivered white need repainting?
They arrive primed in a clean white, ready to live in most interiors. For a durable finish in busy areas, give them a coat of finishing paint after fitting and filling: the touch that makes the difference over time.
Can skirting boards be fitted without drilling?
Yes: two beads of mounting adhesive on the back, firm pressure, a few minutes of holding. On an uneven wall, wedge while drying. Corners are cut at 45° and joints filled before painting. No nails, no screws, no dust.
Can cables be hidden behind a skirting board?
Some profiles have a grooved back or enough space for thin cables. For larger ducts, choose a tall skirting board and check the cable space given on each product sheet.
Wall panels
What does an acoustic slat panel bring?
The best of both worlds: a warm wooden relief for the eye, an absorbent felt for the ear. Reverberation drops, the room gains acoustic comfort and character. Fitted directly to the wall by screwing or gluing, cut with an ordinary saw.
On which surfaces can a decorative panel be fitted?
Any sound, dry, flat surface suits it: plasterboard, plaster, concrete, even old tiles. Lightly sand a painted wall to help adhesion, and prime porous surfaces. Then make way for the décor.
Wall panels and bathroom: compatible?
Yes for polyurethane panels, unaffected by moisture, as long as they stay out of direct contact with water — the inside of the shower is off limits. Wood-based panels prefer dry or very well ventilated rooms.
How do I integrate a 3D panel without overloading the room?
The 3D panel likes restraint: a single feature wall, behind a headboard or a sofa, is enough to transform the space. Add grazing light — a wall lamp or an angled spotlight — and the relief comes alive through the day.
Installation & finishing
Which adhesive for your decorative elements?
An acrylic mounting adhesive in a cartridge, designed for light décor: it fixes and acts as a finishing joint. Allow one cartridge for 6 to 8 metres of profile. At joints between elements, a dedicated joint adhesive bonds the ends permanently.
Paint before or after fitting?
The finish happens after fitting: joints and filled touch-ups need their coat of paint. The ideal approach: a first coat before fitting, the final coat once everything is filled. A uniform result, with no visible touch-ups.
How long does it take to fit cornices in a room?
Half a day is enough for a careful DIYer in a 20 m² room, cuts and gluing included. Add drying time before painting. Our 2 m lengths work in your favour: fewer joints, faster fitting, a purer line.
Does polyurethane age well?
Remarkably. It does not yellow or distort, and is of no interest to moisture or insects. Dressed in a quality acrylic paint, it lasts for decades without a wrinkle. An investment that keeps its promises.
Which tools to cut the profiles?
The essentials come down to two items: a fine-toothed saw and a 45° mitre box. The material cuts cleanly, without effort or splinters. For large projects, an electric mitre saw brings speed and jeweller’s precision.
